Umbrian WildlifeUmbria is a rural region with large areas of rugged mountain terrain and it is home to numerous nature reserves. Our own property faces the Regional Park of Monte Subasio which encompasses Assisi. Most of the property is on an incline. It is studded with mature trees, partly cultivated with olive trees, and has areas of woodland that show clear signs of coppicing. It is fairly typical certainly of the more upland part of the region in its level of wildness. Its nine hectares are here taken as a 'microcosm' in order to offer a view of Umbrian wildlife in a more-or-less coherent environment. This is not a scientific treatise and common names are used in preference to scientific names. There are also notes and anecdotes for interest and entertainment. |
