Gualdo Cattaneo now consists of two halves - the original medieval walled hill fortress which contains the shops and comune of Gualdo Cattaneo and the outlying (and largely newer) houses which are mainly set on the surrounding steep slopes. It was these thickly wooded slopes which gave Gualdo its name (Wald is German or Saxon for Wood).

Today Gualdo Cattaneo is a growing community set to the southwest of Bevagna and between there and the Ponte di Ferro and Bastardo - two strong contenders for the least visually appealing locations in Umbria.

Gualdo Cattaneo is not particularly well served by Public Transport; the nearest railway station being in Foligno and there only being an intermittent bus service.
